Not quite high enough to be classified a munro ( a mere 2757 ft – just short of the 3000 ft required to qualifiy for Munro status) this impressive prominence is located near the charming little town of Pitlochry in Scotland, making it an ideal place for a lovely day out in nature. Its craggy, lush magnificence presents trekking aficionados with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

A hike up Ben Vrackie presents and excellent avenue for all outdoor enthusiasts with upwards of moderate skill level. Starting from the parking lot near Moulin Hotel, the hiking trail leads you through fields of striking heather meandering into a lush, forested region. The breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside provide a treat for the eyes and one’s soul.

As you amble through this idyllic landscape, you’ll encounter several small streams that tumble and trickle through their onward journey. This peaceful and serene setting is enveloped in a picturesque tapestry of moorland, woodland and valley scenery.

For those hillwalkers who feel that the challenge of the entire upwards climb might prove too testing, there is a resting point 2/3 of the way up, near the picturesque Loch a’ Choire. Nonetheless, it is worthy to note that steps have been formed, both to protect the immediate environment and for ease of progress

The views from the ascent of Ben Vrackie are quite stunning. Once at the summit, the panorama extends to the whole of Perthshire and to the Cairngorms. On a very clear day, Ben Nevis may be seen. This mountain, of some 2759ft, offers good, well-formed paths through woodland, across moorland and past a small lochan. . There are two optional extensions of the basic “there and back” walk.

Killiecrankie Walk

A popular walk that can be extended or curtailed to offer a medium or several long-distance versions. If extended to include the Beallach, route, takes the more energetic walker almost to the summit of Ben Vrackie. Otherwise, it offers an extremely pleasant hike along both shores of Loch Faskally

This circular walk offers many interesting features and passes along country roads, grassy verges, past river, loch and rapids and through woodland. There are many opportunities to curtail or extend the basic route and degree of challenge. Wildlife sightings are common and the scenery is varied and stunning.

Linn of Tummel

The Foss Road walk, which leads to the Linn of Tummel Rapids, is a moderate roadside-walk that offers a truly spectacular and immersive experience for those seeking to revel in the stunning natural beauty of Perthshire. This walk is perfect for those who want to lose themselves amidst both breathtaking and delightful nature and enjoy a refreshing exercise while being surrounded by magnificent landscapes.

As you navigate through the lush hillsides and winding paths, you will have a chance to experience the region’s spectacular waterfalls, plunge pools, and rapids, which have been chiseled out by centuries of water erosion. You will be mesmerized by the cascading water and the sheer power of nature on display.

Enroute, you will pass the impressive stone archway leading to Clunie Power Station, whose water-side setting offers an opportunity to rest awhile and admire one of the most beautiful scenes along Loch Faskally

Falls of Bruar

A visit to The Falls of Bruar can be combined with a few hours spent at the impeccable House of Bruar visitor centre. Some can take or leave its exceptional shopping experience. However, you’d have to travel far to exceed their excellent lunches!

We always recommend setting aside an entire day for exploring the peace of heaven that resides in the Killiecrankie/ Blair Atholl/ Bruar area. The Pass of Killicrankie is outstandingly beautiful, as are the Autumn colours across the entire Glen. It has been remarked that these may be viewed best from the summit of Craig Fonvuick, However, Autumn views are quite exceptional from just about any point along the valley.

The circular walk to the two-section Falls of Bruar give the option to curtail the hike at the first falls, which are perfectly thrilling to behold. Despite the pull on calf muscles as the ascent steepens a little, the second set of falls is well within the ability of an average walker. Good shoes are always recommended for strolling in the countryside.

Edradour Walk with Black Spout Wood

A truly lovely walk through unspoiled woodland, past a waterfall then ascending through pasture to the delightful hamlet of Edradour. Complete with distillery, this area offers stunning views over Pitlochry. The walk then meanders along the roadside through the pretty village of Moulin, offering an extension past Pitlochry Golf Course and the Cuilc pond, bak to the charming town of Pitlochry
