Rosemount Hotel offers something quietly valuable on a photography holiday in Pitlochry: the ease of being close to the landscape, and the comfort of returning somewhere that feels unforced and familiar. From the door, it’s a short walk to river bends, forest edges, and viewpoints that reveal themselves slowly as the light changes. Days are spent following curiosity with a camera; evenings drift into conversation, where single travellers and small groups gather naturally to share what they noticed — a moment of still water, a passing shadow, a scene that almost slipped by. It’s in that gentle rhythm, between solitude and shared experience, that photography holidays here find their lasting appeal.

A Few Local Tips from Us

  • We’re always happy to recommend walks based on the weather and your dog’s energy levels
  • Leads are best in areas with livestock or ground-nesting birds
  • Some paths can get muddy after rain—boots (for you!) are a good idea
  • If you’d like a quieter route, just ask—we know a few

Shorter Walks on Level Ground

It’s always a worthwhile matter to note that we should not over stretch our dogs when taking walks in unfamiliar areas. A few shorter, but nonetheless satisfying walks that are close to Rosemount Hotel, but also offer parking nearby. Comfortable shoes recommended, though boots are not necessary.

Pitlochry Dam & Fish Ladder – Short and Interesting

The circuit around the Pitlochry Dam and Fish Ladder is an easy option close to town.

It’s not a long walk, but it’s a good change of scene, and ideal if you’re fitting in a quick outing between other plans. Dogs tend to enjoy the mix of water, paths, and new surroundings. The waterside Portnacraig Inn ot Boating Station both provide excellent coffee stops with outdoor seating and fabulous scenery

Loch Dunmore Pitlochry

Loch Dunmore – A Bit More to Explore

The walk from Pitlochry to Loch Dunmore is a gentle and rewarding outing that gradually leaves the bustle of the town behind. Setting off, you follow a safe pavement as you pass both turnings onto the A9, before continuing on to look out for the sign for Loch Faskally and Marine Scotland. From here, the route becomes quieter and more relaxed, leading you along a lightly used road that feels increasingly removed from everyday life. The sense of calm builds with every step, helped by the steady rhythm of walking and the growing presence of trees and birdsong.

As the road winds on, you pass through enchanting mixed forestry, where pine, birch and oak frame the way ahead. A small car park appears on the left, and just beyond it Loch Dunmore reveals itself as the most pleasant surprise — a still, atmospheric loch that feels quietly special. The area is rich in wildlife: kingfishers flashing low over the water, otters moving along the loch’s edge, and in the surrounding woods red and roe deer, woodpeckers and red squirrels. It’s a walk that rewards patience and attention, offering a sense of discovery and a peaceful destination that feels well worth the journey from Pitlochry.

Walks with a Gradient or Some Uneven Ground

Whilst we must always be cautious in taking our dogs on unfamilair walks and research the terrain ahead of the event, we can’t over-protect our furry friends. Boredom can be equally as harmful to a vibrant young dog as over-exercise.

These following walks provide both animal and companion to hours of fun, variety of scenery and many happy memories for the weeks, months and years to come.

Craigower Hill

The walk from Pitlochry town centre to Craigower Hill is a classic local route that combines easy access with a real sense of reward. Leaving the centre of town, you head past the Cuilc and alongside the golf course, where open fairways and mature trees give the walk a relaxed, spacious feel. The path gradually begins to climb as you leave the manicured landscape behind, transitioning into woodland and open hillside. The ascent is steady rather than strenuous, allowing you to settle into the walk and enjoy the changing views as the town slowly drops away below you.

Reaching the top of Craigower Hill, you’re met with one of the finest viewpoints in the area. From here, Pitlochry spreads out beneath you, with rooftops, river and railway clearly visible, framed by surrounding hills and forest. On clear days, the view stretches far beyond the town, offering a real sense of the wider Highland landscape. It’s an ideal spot to pause, take in the scenery and appreciate how quickly you can move from the heart of Pitlochry to a viewpoint that feels elevated, peaceful and quietly impressive.

of course, there are longer walks too, but you might like to check our tips for caring for your dog on longer walks before setting off.

Linn of Tummel

The walk from Pitlochry to the Linn of Tummel is a quietly impressive route that offers a wonderful sense of space and scale. Setting out from the town, you cross the dam at Loch Faskally, where the views open across the water to wooded slopes and distant hills, often shifting with the light. From there, the Foss Road follows the edge of the loch, gently curving through a landscape of trees, open water and Highland scenery. It’s a route that feels calm and unforced, allowing you to take in the surroundings without ever feeling rushed.

Underfoot, the walk is largely on a quiet road, complemented by wide soft verges that make it comfortable and easy-going, whether you’re strolling at a leisurely pace or walking with a dog. As you near the Linn of Tummel, the sound of the river becomes more pronounced before the scene opens to fast-moving water, rocky banks and mature woodland — a striking and memorable contrast to the stillness of the loch. At around two miles each way, the out-and-back walk strikes a perfect balance: long enough to feel rewarding, yet accessible, with exceptional scenery throughout.

Ben Vrackie – For Energetic Dogs (and Owners)

If your dog enjoys a proper outing, Ben Vrackie is the local hill walk.

We’ve done it many times over the years, and while the path is clear, it does get steep. On a clear day, the views are worth the effort—but we’d always suggest checking the weather and allowing plenty of time. We’re very happy to advise on whether it’s a good day for it.
